How to choose the right lamp shade for your table lamp

A lampshade serves two primary purposes. It protects the eyes from the glare of bare bulbs and directs light into the room. But lamps create ambiance and provide task lighting, and it is also desirable for a room to have multiple light sources. The right lampshade enhances the function of a room and enhances its ambiance. Most spaces require localized lighting, but for a more comfortable setting, decorate the lamp base with the right size shade to create the perfect proportion and make a style statement.

Determine the base of the table lamp

Before choosing a lamp base for your table lamp, determine what kind of table lamp you have or need. Choose a lamp base that complements or matches the décor of your room. Perhaps you already have a base that could benefit from a new lamp shade, or you may want a new lamp to light up the room. Either way, a properly installed shade provides the perfect look. There are matching lamps and shades as well as a variety of mix-and-match bases and shades that can be easily matched to create a custom look.

Measuring the base of a table lamp

Use a tape measure to accurately measure the base of the lamp. Measure the height from the base to the top of the bulb socket. Measure the width of the base. If the lamp is round, measure the width at the widest part of the circumference. You will measure the lamp base in the following order: top, bottom, height, and tilt.

Choosing the right lampshade

When looking for the perfect shade for your installation, the size and shape of the lamp base will guide your choice. Lamp shades come in many shapes: round, bell and square. Lampshades are also available in many materials: rattan lampshades, bamboo lampshades, and woven lampshades. Simple lamps allow you to experiment with lampshade shapes, colors and materials. Ornate lamps are best paired with simple, understated lampshades.

Measuring the Lampshade

Using a ruler or tape measure, measure the width of the top of the lampshade first, then the width of the bottom. If it is a rectangular shade, measure both widths. For a round shade, place the tape measure on the top of the shade. Measure from edge to edge and as close to the center as possible. This will give you the top diameter.

Balancing Lampshade and Base

The top diameter of the lamp shade should be at least as wide as the base, but not more than twice as wide. The height of the lampshade should not exceed two-thirds of the height of the lamp.

Installing the lamp shade of a table lamp

Three types of fittings can be used to attach the shade to the lamp base. The screw-in shade screws onto the lamp base with just a few easy turns. To install this type of fitting, mount the shade to the base before screwing in the bulb. Clip-on shades have a clip that unfolds to mount directly onto the bulb. Spider shades are mounted on the top of a metal harp. Spider shades are perfect for adding a decorative finish to the top.
